Why is Mars red?

Home | Why is the sky blue? | Why is the ocean blue?
Why are sunsets red? | Why are clouds white? | Why is Mars red?

The planet Mars is red because of the red rusted iron dust particles in its atmosphere.

The soil of Mars is red as well.

Mars is not red because of scattered light - like on earth. The planet Mars has a much thinner atmosphere. Scattered light is much less of a factor on Mars.

Why are the pictures of Mars at the top of this webpage not red?

These are not pictures of Mars. It is colour-coded images of Mars generated using only the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter data. No cameras were involved. Lowlying areas are shown in a darker color than higher areas. Bright yellow represents the highest areas.
